UNELSS Upcoming Events

Careers Week, Kirby Visit and Gala Dinner!

Hi Students!

Welcome back to Trimester 2. The LSS has some great events coming up in the next couple of weeks which we are very excited about. We hope you are too!

Careers Week

After the success of last years event, this years Careers Week will be taking place week commencing 28th July, with the generous support of ANU Legal Workshop. We have some excellent speakers lined up including Adam Marshall MP, The Hon. Barnaby Joyce MP, Local Magistrate Karen Stafford and quite a few more.

If you haven’t checked out the timetable, head over to the event page and put yourself down as attending. This way you can stay in the loop! We will be providing lunch on all days at 12pmand are looking forward to giving away some goodie bags. Be sure to get in quick, once they are gone, they’re gone. For external students we will be podcasting as many of the sessions as we can, and uploading for your viewing pleasure.

The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG

The School of Law will be hosting a visit by Mr Kirby on 1st of August. Mr Kirby is a former High Court Justice and continues to make significant contributions to the community. Most recently he has led a commission of inquiry into human rights in North Korea. He will be speaking in LT1 on Friday 1st of August at 12pm. He is a warm and engaging speaker and we would encourage all students to attend.

We have it on good authority that Mr Kirby has allocated some additional time to talk specifically to law students. Register your interest on our event page and we will keep you in the loop!

Careers Week Gala Dinner

Careers Week Gala dinner will take place on Friday 1st of August. We will have in attendance Tiffany Davy who is a barrister practicing in Sydney at Edmond Barton Chambers.

Tickets are $30 for members, $40 for non members and the price includes a glass on arrival and a three course meal. It was a wonderful event last year and we are very much looking forward to sharing a meal and a laugh with you. Tickets are available in the LSS shop and we will also be selling tickets outside the library next week (21st July-25th July) from 11am-1pm. You can also buy tickets from us during Careers week. Don’t forget to check out the event page to stay in the loop.

Kind regards,

UNE Law Students’ Society

UNE School of Law’s collaboration with the Royal University of Bhutan

Building upon UNE’s long established friendship and cooperation with the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), Professors Michael Stuckey and Mark Perry recently visited the Gaeddu College of Business Studies (RUB). The visit finalised the plans between the partners to co-teach law subjects using state-of-the-art technology. Students from both institutions will jointly participate in Intellectual Property and Tax classes later in 2014, making the most of shared expertise and strengthening their skills to operate effectively in a globalized world.

UNE and RUB are working together to maximize the opportunities for their students to become competent and confident in law and business in a transnational world.

UNE students who would like to visit Bhutan, and participate face-to-face learning about how the Bhutanese concept of gross national happiness articulates into the world of business and law, also have the chance to avail themselves of a generous offer by RUB to host short visits. UNE students who are interested in such an opportunity are advised to contact the office of the Head of School (Professor Stuckey) at hoslaw@une.edu.au

College of Law PLT Seminar, May 16th.

colWe are very happy to have our sponsors the College of Law visiting the UNE campus on Friday, 16th May.

They will host an information session on the PLT programs they offer, from 14:15 in the Lewis Seminar room.

We strongly encourage all internal students to attend.

The seminar will also be available as a download for external students.

In Memoriam

Dear Students,

As you may be aware by now, it is a sad day at UNE Law School with the passing of Fran Wright on Monday 14th April. UNELSS would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Fran made a tremendous contribution to the University and will be missed.

Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers at this very sad time. Although she had been very ill for a few weeks, there had been some hope of recovery.

While none will be quite as sad as her family, she was much loved by all who worked with her. Please keep this in mind over the next little while as all of the staff at the law school grieve.

UNELSS will be accepting donations from students who may like to contribute to a memorial fund to assist her family. If you would like to contribute, you can deposit into our bank account.

  • BSB: 650 000
  • Account Number: 512 445 505
  • Account name: University of New England Law Students’ Society

Please enter ‘In Memoriam’ into the description field.

With our sincerest condolences,

UNELSS Executive
